The Bharatiya Janata Party-led Assam government has decided to appoint ace athlete Hima Das as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
Himanta Biswa Sarma made the announcement while presenting the state budget for the financial year 2020-2021 on Friday.
In his budget speech, Dr. Sarma said,“Those sports persons from Assam who have won gold medals in Olympic, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games will be appointed as the grade one officer of the Assam Government.”
“We are happy to announce that ‘Dhing Express’ Hima Das will be the first beneficiary of this initiative. She will be offered the post of DSP,” Sarma added.
He expressed hope that the initiative would be helpful in promoting sporting spirit among the young people of the state.
Reacting to the news, Hima Das took to Twitter to thank Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Himanta Biswa Sarma for offering her the DSP post.
It is to be mentioned that Hima Das is the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal in a track event at the IAAF World U20 Championships.
