Medhikhushi village is one of the worst affected villages in the Bajali district where more than 35 houses of poor people and many animals were washed away due to the current wave of flood.
The villagers were in shock and broke into tears after they returned home from the relief camp as their houses and animals were completely washed away when the embankment of the Pahumara River was breached by the flood.
The farmers who prepared paddy seedlings for the ensuing cultivation spent sleepless nights as their paddy field is covered with sand.
Manoj Talukdar, a resident of the area, is still waiting for his cows and chickens near the Pahumara river embankment.He said, “My 3 houses, 6 cows and 1500 chickens from my farm were washed away. I have lost my income sources. Now, the flood is gone, and we don’t have any home to stay in. I don’t know- what to do, where to go. We can’t build a house again.”
Kamleswar Kalita, a senior citizen of the area said, “During flood time, we had to leave homes without taking our important households and animals. immediately after district administration alerted us to stay in the safest place.”
“Now people are safe but their houses and animals were completely washed away. It takes a few hours to destroy. But it’s hard to work to be able to build a house again.”
He also said, “The area is a flood prone area.Government is planning to build a Bhattadev University campus in this Medhikuchi village.How an institution function in this flood-affected area near Pahumara river?” A woman said.
“We have lost our home, animals, money, paddy. We poor people, how we can regain our property and our animals as we don’t don’t have any other income source. Our hopes and dreams have been completely washed away by the devastating flood. The government should look into us or otherwise we have to die in hunger.”
Various NGO’s like Jan Briddhi, One Star is working day and night They have been distributing essential commodities among the people of flood affected area.
Meanwhile, In Bajali more than 3 lakh people of the district have been affected by the flood after Bhutan releases water from the Kurichhu dam where two people reportedly died and one person was missing authorities said.There is no power supply for fast few days as the wire cable and post were completely destroyed.
