With the political atmosphere heating up ahead of the 2025 Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) has begun mobilizing its cadre and supporters in full force. In a significant show of strength, the party organized a major mass joining event at Chaprabari in Mazbat, Udalguri district on Tuesday.

The event saw an impressive turnout, with 823 individuals from various walks of life, including a large number of women, formally joining the UPPL. This surge in grassroots support comes in the wake of Assam BJP President and Darrang-Udalguri MP Dilip Saikia announcing that the BJP will contest the BTC elections independently, fielding candidates in as many of the 40 council seats as possible.

Speaking at the event, Raju Dhakal, Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to BTC Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro, said the mass joining reflects public confidence in the UPPL’s leadership and vision. “This is just the beginning,” he stated. “In the coming days, many more will join the party.”

Gobinda Chandra Basumatary, Udalguri MLA and Deputy CEM of BTC, emphasized that the widespread support for the UPPL is rooted in the party’s commitment to good governance and inclusive development. “The people have seen the positive changes brought about under the current regime,” he said. “Their spontaneous decision to join UPPL is a testament to that progress.”

The event was also attended by Rabindra Basumatary, President of UPPL’s Udalguri District Committee, along with several other key party leaders and workers.

As the BTC election battlelines are drawn, UPPL appears poised to retain its influence in the Bodo belt, strengthening its position through grassroots mobilization and growing public support.
