A shocking video is making rounds on social media showing a few girls from the Northeast, India were reportedly sexually harassed by a group of men in Delhi’s Hauz Khas area. The girls recorded a video of the incident, which then went viral on social media.

The video shows a group of middle aged men asking ‘rate kya hai‘ (what’s your rate) to a group of women, assuming them to be sex workers. 

As per the girls, they were in Hauz Khas when a group of men stopped them to ask them “their rate for sexual activities”. In the video, the girls can be seen confronting the men. After this, the men can be heard apologising for their act.

Taking suo moto cognisance of the matter, Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal issued a notice to the Delhi Police. The Delhi Police has been asked to register an FIR in the matter and to start a probe.

Swati Maliwal said on the issue, “I saw this video on social media and was disgusted to see how the group of men were fearlessly harassing the girls. Strong deterrence needs to be created against sexual harassment so that no one dares to commit such a crime. We have issued a notice to the police seeking an FIR and probe in the matter.”

Meanwhile, Various students organisation from Assam’s Guwahati University, Bhattadev University along with NE students union Vadodara ( Gujarat ) demanded strict punishment into the incident.

Gunjan Rajbongshi, a student of Bhattadev University said, “Since Independence, people from the Northeast have been facing discrimination across the country. Yesterday an incident came into light that happened in the National Capital, where men hurled slurs like ‘what’s your rate’ to a few girls from the Northeast.” 

He added, “People from Northeast are being hurled slurs like ‘Chinkis’ and ‘Chinese’ and it is prevalent all over the country. It’s time people realise the motto of diversity and I urge and demand that the government take concrete measures to stop such incidents.” 

Debonil Baruah, Advisor of NE students union Vadodara  ( Gujarat ), “I highly condemn the incident. People from NE have been facing discrimination, racial slur, abusive comments only because of their facial structure. At the same time, I would say that not only Northeast, women belonging from any part of this world or our country doesn’t deserve to be treated in that way. I request to the concern authorities to take appropriate action against the culprits.”
